Yamunotri is a sacred Hindu pilgrimage site in Uttarakhand, India, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. It is one of the Char Dham Yatra destinations and is situated at an altitude of 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. The Yamunotri Temple, built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, marks the origin of the Yamuna River. However, the actual source, Yamunotri Glacier, lies about 6 km away at an altitude of 6,315 meters.
Pilgrims trek from Hanuman Chatti (14 km) or Janki Chatti (6 km) to reach the temple. Along the way, they visit Surya Kund, a hot water spring where devotees cook rice as an offering to the goddess. The temple opens in May and closes in October due to heavy snowfall. Yamunotri is surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, making it a significant spiritual and travel destination for both devotees and nature lovers.
