Gangotri is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, India. It is part of the Char Dham Yatra and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Located at 3,100 meters above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas, the Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century by a Gorkha general, Amar Singh Thapa. According to legend, this is where the River Ganga descended from heaven after King Bhagirath’s penance. The temple is open from May to October. Nearby, the Gaumukh Glacier, the river’s source, is a popular trekking destination for adventure seekers and devotees alike.
